You just finished the dreamiest session with me and you are getting in the car on the way home. You are probably wondering why you have to wait so long for your photos. Deep down, hoping the photos will be done before you pull into your driveway. I promise photographers do not do this to torture you, we are excited to see how your photos turned out too! I am going to explain a day in MY life as a photographer to help you understand more about this.
Morning Routine
My day starts early, often with an iced coffee, hungry baby and a grumpy toddler. I spend the first hour responding to emails, confirming sessions, and checking weather forecasts for any outdoor shoots. It’s important to stay organized and prepared to ensure each session runs smoothly.
Pre-Shoot Preparation
Before heading out, I gather all the necessary equipment. This includes cameras, lenses, lighting gear, and backup batteries. I also double-check my memory cards to ensure they’re formatted and ready to capture new faces. If I’m shooting at a new location, I make a point to research it and plan potential spots for the best shots.
The Photoshoot
During the shoot, my primary goal is to make my clients feel comfortable and natural. I give gentle directions and encourage them to relax and enjoy the experience. Capturing genuine moments and emotions is key to creating stunning images. Whether it’s a family portrait, a wedding, or a milestone, each session is unique and tailored to my clients’ needs.
Post-Shoot: Reviewing and Editing
After the shoot, the real magic begins in my office (or a coffee shop). I upload the photos to my hard drive and back them up immediately to avoid any data loss. The editing process involves selecting the best images, adjusting lighting, correcting colors, and retouching any imperfections. Each photo is carefully enhanced to bring out its full potential while maintaining a natural/moody look. Sometimes, this includes hours worth of photoshop work.
Continuous Learning and Inspiration
Photography is an ever-evolving field, and I dedicate time each day to learn new techniques and stay inspired. This could be through online courses, reading photography blogs, or experimenting with different styles and equipment. Staying curious and open to new ideas helps me grow as a photographer and keeps my work fresh and exciting. Not to mention, photographers are full time social media managers too, after all!
Conclusion
Being a professional photographer is a rewarding and fulfilling career that combines technical skills with artistic vision. Each day is different, filled with new challenges and opportunities to capture the beauty of life’s moments. I hope this behind-the-scenes glimpse has given you a better understanding of the dedication and passion that goes into my work.
